Persistent State
A Dreamwave Journey by Signal Fiction
13 tracks // 00:58:04 // Parallel Names
Some places are remembered before they are visited.
Warm analog synthesizers, intimate vocals and chorused guitar carry a story of lucid dreams, shared rooms and a memory that arrives before the experience.
Persistent memory
The room
was waiting.
A woman falls asleep and enters a place she has never visited. She already knows which floorboard creaks, which window sticks and what waits beyond a door that should not exist.
The rooms retain changes between visits. Another person remembers them too. Soon she is recalling details before she reaches them, and the place begins acting one second ahead of her choices.
The album never says what the place is. The discovery matters because it can be repeated, and because it makes reality feel larger.
If a dream gives you a memory you never lived, is it still your dream?

Room 02The First RoomEntering // Vocal
Rain on glass. A blue door where the wall should be.
Lyrics
Verse 1Rain beads against the window glass
The clock reads two seventeen
A jacket hangs behind the chair
In a size I've never seen
The radiator clicks twice
The hallway bulb burns low
I know which board will creak next
I don't know how I knowPre-ChorusThe room gets wider when I blink
Then narrows back in place
A strip of blue runs down the wall
Where plaster filled the spaceChorusI know this room, I know this floor
I know there wasn't any door
The second hand jumps back a notch
My hand is resting on the latchVerse 2The kitchen tile is cold and clean
A kettle warms an empty cup
The calendar says August ninth
The window's frosted halfway up
Blue paint is drying on my hand
I haven't touched the door at all
The clock still says two seventeen
I hear my footsteps in the hallPre-ChorusThe room gets wider when I blink
Then narrows back in place
The blue door waits inside the wall
I know the marks around its frameChorusI know this room, I know this floor
I know there wasn't any door
The second hand jumps back a notch
My hand is resting on the latchFinal ChorusI know this room, I know this floor
I know there always was a door
The second hand jumps back a notch
My hand is resting on the latchOutroMy shoes are wet beside the bed
The street outside is dry -
Room 03I Know This PlaceRecognition // Vocal
The fourth floor exists above a lift that stops at three.
Lyrics
Verse 1The lift opens on the fourth floor
The buttons stop at three
A yellow lamp beside the stairs
Is already warm for me
The carpet turns before the glass
I know where not to step
The window at the landing sticks
I lift it from the leftPre-ChorusA key is waiting in my coat
Stamped two-one-four
I've never walked this hall before
I know what room it's forChorusI know this place
The turn, the stair, the yellow light
I know which window won't shut tight
I know this place
The kitchen drawer that sticks halfway
The photograph that's turned away
I know this place
I shouldn't know this placeVerse 2Room two-one-four smells faintly
Of cedar, dust and rain
A pencil mark beside the door
Stops halfway through a name
The radio is turned down low
I know the song by heart
Before the singer takes a breath
I know the next four barsPre-ChorusThe key is warm inside my hand
Stamped two-one-four
I haven't tried the lock at all
I'm standing at the doorChorusI know this place
The turn, the stair, the yellow light
I know which window won't shut tight
I know this place
The kitchen drawer that sticks halfway
The photograph that's turned away
I know this place
I shouldn't know this placeBridgeInside the drawer, my name is there
The handwriting is mine
A date is written underneath
From before I learned to writeFinal ChorusI know this place
The turn, the stair, the yellow light
I know which window won't shut tight
I know this place
The kitchen drawer that sticks halfway
The photograph that's turned away
I know this place
I shouldn't know this placeOutroThe lift closes on the fourth floor
The buttons still stop at three -
Room 04LucidLucid // Vocal
The pavement falls away. Recognition becomes exhilaration.
Lyrics
Verse 1The crossing signal counts from nine
Then jumps from seven back to ten
I read the shop sign through the glass
The letters change and change again
I press my thumbnail in my palm
It leaves no crescent when I stop
I step up on the bus-stop bench
And wait to see if I will dropPre-ChorusOne foot goes out beyond the curb
My weight should pull me down
I lift the other from the bench
And stay above the groundChorusThis is a dream, I know it now
The pavement's six feet down
I push my heels against the air
And rise above the square
The roofs are level with my feet
I laugh above the empty streetVerse 2I point at one dark window pane
The room behind turns gold
I hold my hand out to the rain
Each drop hangs still and cold
I tap one gently with my thumb
It drifts across the square
I think the awning should be red
It's red when I look therePre-ChorusI take a running step this time
No need to test the ground
The curb drops twenty feet below
Before I turn aroundChorusThis is a dream, I know it now
The pavement's six feet down
I push my heels against the air
And rise above the square
The roofs are level with my feet
I laugh above the empty streetBridgeFor one second I feel the sheets
The pillow cool against my face
I hold completely still in bed
The street comes slowly back in placeFinal ChorusThis is a dream, I know it now
The pavement's six feet down
I push my heels against the air
And rise above the square
The roofs are level with my feet
I laugh above the empty street -
Room 05Shared RoomShared // Vocal
Two people know the same room and leave the same objects behind.
Lyrics
Verse 1Two chairs are set against the wall
There used to only be the one
You stand beneath the yellow lamp
Watching the fan that won't come on
Your sleeve is dark with rain at cuff
The window glass is dry
You reach behind the picture frame
And find the switch first tryPre-ChorusYou know the window sticks halfway
You lift it from the left
You miss the board beside the bed
That groans beneath my stepChorusYou know this room
The hidden switch, the crooked blind
You know this room
The place I thought was only mine
You cross the dark without a light
And stop where I stood here last night
I knew this place
You know it tooVerse 2You tap the pipe before it knocks
Two knocks come back to you
You pull the bottom drawer halfway
The way I always do
You lift the loose tile by the sink
Without checking which square
A brass key lies beneath the dust
You knew that it was therePre-ChorusI pick the key up from the floor
You point toward the cup
I pull red thread out of my coat
You turn the key face-upChorusYou know this room
The hidden switch, the crooked blind
You know this room
The place I thought was only mine
You cross the dark without a light
And stop where I stood here last night
I knew this place
You know it tooBridgeWe wind red thread around the key
And leave it under the blue cup
You turn the chair toward the wall
I leave the window halfway up
I fold the corner of the map
You press it flat beneath the tray
We look once more around the room
And leave it just that wayFinal ChorusWe know this room
The hidden switch, the crooked blind
We know this room
The place was never only mine
We cross the dark without a light
And stop where we both stood tonight
I knew this place
You knew it too -
Room 06Further InReturn // Vocal
The route returns on purpose, then continues past the remembered edge.
Lyrics
Verse 1I turn the lamp toward the wall
The window's open just a crack
I set the desk fan running low
And lay my watch down on its back
I count the blades until they blur
Keep both my hands flat on the sheet
The clock face smears behind my eyes
Then tile is cold beneath my feetPre-ChorusThe yellow landing light is on
The rail is cold beneath my hand
The scrape still marks the painted wall
Exactly where I knew it would standChorusI came back on purpose
I know the way this time
The hallway bends beside the stairs
The doors fall into line
I pass the room I started in
Past every place I've been
The street runs farther than before
I keep going further inVerse 2Past the last shop, the pavement ends
Blue tile begins beneath my feet
An indoor pool fills half the square
The air smells faintly of concrete
I drop a coin beside the drain
It falls too slowly through the blue
The splash comes back a second late
I take the door marked SERVICE TWOPre-ChorusThe corridor beyond is cold
The plaster changes white to green
I reach the point my memory stops
And turn where I have never beenChorusI came back on purpose
I know the way this time
The hallway bends beside the stairs
The doors fall into line
I pass the room I started in
Past every place I've been
The street runs farther than before
I keep going further inBridgeThe corridor ends at open air
A greenhouse roofed in wired glass
I put my palm against the pane
My reflection keeps on walking pastFinal ChorusI came back on purpose
I know the way this time
The hallway bends beside the stairs
The doors fall into line
I pass the room I started in
Past every place I've been
The street runs farther than before
I keep going further in -
Room 07A Memory Ahead of MeAdvance recall // Vocal
A room is recalled in detail before the corner is turned.
Lyrics
Verse 1Before I reach the service stairs
I know the seventh tread is chipped
The landing smells of copier heat
The brass rail's paint is partly stripped
I haven't turned the corner yet
But know one vending row is dead
A paper sign hangs by one tack
Above a chair upholstered redPre-ChorusI stop before I see the room
And say the details to myself
Red chair, clock bent to the right
Three paper cups upon a shelfChorusA memory ahead of me
A place my eyes have yet to see
Red chair beside the rattling vent
Wall clock hanging slightly bent
I turn the corner - they're all there
The red chair and the paper square
I haven't crossed this room before
Yet I can name what's past the doorVerse 2At bottom of the eastern stairs
I picture green mosaic floor
A payphone missing number six
White paint flaking from a door
I stop before the final turn
And picture what should lie ahead
Above the phone, a plastic clock
Its second hand is painted redPre-ChorusI stop before the room appears
And pick one detail I can't see
A grey wool glove beneath the shelf
Inside of locker twenty-threeChorusA memory ahead of me
A place my eyes have yet to see
Red chair beside the rattling vent
Wall clock hanging slightly bent
I turn the corner - they're all there
The red chair and the paper square
I haven't crossed this room before
Yet I can name what's past the doorBridgeI write three details on my wrist
Locker twenty-three, one glove
A transit token tucked above
Then find each item on the listFinal ChorusA memory ahead of me
A place my eyes have yet to see
Red chair beside the rattling vent
Wall clock hanging slightly bent
I turn the corner - they are there
The dented locker, folding chair
Inside, the glove and token sit
Exactly as I pictured itOutroThree doors farther down the hall
I know a room behind the wall -
Room 08Someone Was HerePersistent // Sparse vocal
The cup, key, red thread and chair remain exactly where they were left.
Lyrics
Verse 1The blue cup waits beside the key
Red thread wound the way we tied
The chair still faces toward the wall
The window's open just as wideRefrainStill here
Still here
The cup, the key, the thread
Still hereVerse 2The folded corner marks the map
The brass key hasn't shifted far
A line of dust surrounds the cup
Exactly where the edges areRefrainStill here
Still here
The chair, the map, the thread
Still hereBridgeI lift the cup and find the ring
Still pale against the grain
I move it one hand-width to the left
And leave the room againOutroStill here

Room 09Morning, AlmostFalse wake // Vocal
Morning arrives twice. The blue cup appears only once.
Lyrics
Verse 1Morning through the half-closed blind
Phone says seven twenty-nine
The heater clicks and then goes still
Bus brakes hiss below the sill
I pull my sweater from the chair
Then stop - the blue cup shouldn't be there
One white chip marks the painted side
I left it by the key insidePre-ChorusI know the scratch beneath the glaze
I know the ring the bottom makes
I take one step across the floor
I've never owned that cup beforeChorusMorning, almost
Daylight on the floor
This is still my bedroom
I've never seen that cup before
Morning, almost
Everything looks right
Except the chipped blue ceramic
Waiting in the morning lightVerse 2I lift the cup and turn it round
No maker's mark, no writing found
The handle has a hairline crack
Red thread is caught along the back
I set it underneath the lamp
The painted rim is cold and damp
I check the kitchen, sink and shelf
Then come back just to prove myselfPre-ChorusThe same white chip, the same thin line
The same blue glaze I left behind
I close my eyes and count to four
It's waiting when I look once moreChorusMorning, almost
Daylight on the floor
This is still my bedroom
I've never seen that cup before
Morning, almost
Everything looks right
Except the chipped blue ceramic
Waiting in the morning lightPost-Chorus(Ooh, ooh)
(Ooh, ooh)
Morning, almost
(Ooh, ooh)
Morning, almost
(Ooh, ooh)Second AwakeningI wake with both hands on the sheet
My phone says six forty-three
A bus rolls slowly down the street
No cup is anywhere I see
The chair is empty by the bed
The bedside numbers glow in red
I cross the room and check once more
Nothing blue is on the floorOutroMorning
Almost -
Room 10The Place RemembersAnticipation // Vocal
The lift and lights act before a choice is made.
Lyrics
Verse 1The lift arrives before I call
Its doors slide open in the hall
I haven't touched the button yet
But floor five's already set
The lock clicks once before my hand
The door swings in an inch or two
The lamp beside the crooked blind
Comes on before I make it throughPre-ChorusI face the stairs but choose the hall
I keep the service door in mind
The stairwell stays completely dark
The service light comes on behindChorusThe place remembers
Before I press the call
The lift arrives with doors apart
And waits there in the hall
The place remembers
Before I turn the key
The lamp comes on behind the door
As if it noticed meVerse 2I stop beside the indoor pool
A coin is waiting by the drain
I haven't taken one from home
The water dimples without rain
I think about the service hall
A latch clicks somewhere past the glass
I haven't moved a single step
The door is open when I passPre-ChorusI pick the route I won't look toward
And hold it only in my head
The lights stay dark along my path
And switch three doors ahead insteadChorusThe place remembers
Before I press the call
The lift arrives with doors apart
And waits there in the hall
The place remembers
Before I turn the key
The lamp comes on behind the door
As if it noticed meBridgeI close my eyes and choose a room
No number, no familiar sign
A latch releases down the hall
Three doors ahead and left of mineFinal ChorusThe place remembers
Before I press the call
The lift arrives with doors apart
And waits there in the hall
The place remembers
Before I turn the key
Three doors ahead, the handle turns
One second ahead of me -
Room 11The Way Back InDeliberate return // Vocal
The conditions can be recreated awake.
Lyrics
Verse 1I turn the lamp toward the wall
My watch lies face-down by the bed
The fan ticks once on setting one
I count the blades above my head
The window stays a finger wide
The heater gives its double knock
At thirty-four the fan goes mute
I hear the lift behind the lockPre-ChorusThe yellow bulb is overhead
The service arrow points to three
The rail still flakes beneath my thumb
Exactly where it used to beChorusThe landing bulb hums overhead
The carpet's cold and thin
The lift is waiting on floor five
I found the way back inVerse 2Tonight I leave the lamp alone
My watch stays fastened to my wrist
The fan is unplugged by the chair
The window shuts against the mist
I picture tile beside the pool
The chipped rail by the stair
The clock reads six forty-three
I open my eyes - the lift is therePre-ChorusThe lamp is facing toward the bed
The watch is warm against my skin
The fan sits silent by the chair
The lift doors open. I step in.ChorusThe landing bulb hums overhead
The carpet's cold and thin
The lift is waiting on floor five
I found the way back inBridgeAt noon I try it sitting up
The kettle on, the curtains wide
I think of that yellow landing bulb
And hear the lift doors slide
I open my eyes beside the pool
The coin is by the drain
The SERVICE TWO door clicks once shut
Then opens up againFinal ChorusThe landing bulb hums overhead
The carpet's cold and thin
The lift doors open on floor five
I know the way back in -
Room 12Before I ArrivedChronology unstable // Vocal
A ledger records her name and room forty-two days before the first visit.
Lyrics
Verse 1Behind the greenhouse service door
A narrow office painted grey
A wall clock stopped at half past four
One drawer won't shut all the way
I pull a ledger from the back
Its cloth spine split with age
The binding gives a little crack
And opens to one pagePre-ChorusHalfway down, my name is there
ROOM TWO-ONE-FOUR in print
The time reads TWO SEVENTEEN
MARCH TWENTY-SIX beside itChorusBefore I arrived
My name was in the book
Room two-one-four, two-seventeen
I take another look
March twenty-six above the line
May seventh, page one
I count the gap twice on my phone
Forty-two each timeVerse 2I pull my notebook from my coat
The corners soft from use
May seventh fills the first ruled line
In ordinary blue
Below it: ROOM TWO-ONE-FOUR
Then TIME: TWO-SEVENTEEN
The page before is still intact
No missing sheet betweenPre-ChorusI set the notebook by the book
March twenty-six. May seven.
I count the days once on my phone:
Forty-two.ChorusBefore I arrived
My name was in the book
Room two-one-four, two-seventeen
I take another look
March twenty-six above the line
May seventh, page one
I count the gap twice on my phone
Forty-two each timeBridgeA photograph slips from the spine
And lands beside my chair
I turn it over: room two-one-four
The blue cup sitting there
The lamp is on beside the desk
The blind is halfway down
MARCH TWENTY-FIVE across the back
In plain black block printFinal ChorusBefore I arrived
My name was in the book
Room two-one-four, two-seventeen
I take another look
The photograph shows the blue cup
The lamp beside the wall
MARCH TWENTY-FIVE across the back
Before I'd seen the hall -
